Kessonga is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate and an Outpatient Psychotherapist at Three Oaks Behavioral Health & Wellness in Durham. Kessonga received his Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from North Carolina Central University, and his Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also a Licensed Acupuncturist, Certified Holistic Health Counselor, and Mindfulness Meditation Instructor. In addition to supporting clients at Three Oaks Behavioral Health & Wellness, Kessonga is an adjunct Mindfulness instructor at UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine in the Program for Integrative Medicine (PIM).
Kessonga’s therapeutic approach is integrative, with foundational elements of Mindfulness and Interpersonal process. He also utilizes components of other evidence-based treatment models including: Motivational Interviewing, Solution-Focused Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Kessonga believes that true change and healing comes from a holistic approach, in which awareness, understanding, and resiliency are increased. To accomplish this, Kessonga prioritizes establishing a positive therapeutic relationship with all of his clients.
Kessonga’s clinical areas of focus include, but are not limited to, depression, anxiety, stress resiliency, group psychotherapy and sports/athletic performance enhancement. He enjoys supporting clients who are enduring major life transitions and are looking for a way to manage the “catastrophe of life." Kessonga is also passionate about treating trauma related to experiences of racism, oppression and discrimination. He works with individuals from all gender, cultural, racial, and religious backgrounds. He also works with emerging adults, college students, and athletes.
In his spare time, Kessonga enjoys going to the movies, playing tennis, traveling, writing, and spending quality time with his family.
