J. Taylor Houchens, MS, LCMHC
Outpatient Psychotherapist in Durham
Taylor is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (11595) and Outpatient Psychotherapist at Three Oaks Behavioral Health and Wellness in Durham. Taylor earned his Bachelors Degree in Music from the University of Georgia and a Masters Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Taylor specializes in working with men and teenage males, focusing on relationships, finding your purpose, work-life balance, self-esteem, and reclaiming healthy masculinity. He facilitates men's groups and assists in healing wounded father-son relationships. He helps you remember that you are enough. You matter. And you are worthy. Knowing and feeling this is our natural state of being, but we forget it due to the trauma we experience in our life, especially during childhood.
These childhood traumas push us away from our natural state, causing us to experience hopelessness, depression, addiction, general anxiety, PTSD, lack of motivation and direction, religious or spiritual issues, and more. If you are experiencing these issues, Taylor can assist you in overcoming these barriers, helping you feel more levity and freedom in your life.
Taylor uses therapeutic methods such as Somatic Experiencing, Music Therapy, Drumming, Expressive Arts Therapy, Hypnotherapy, Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and he is LGBTQIA+ affirming. Taylor believes there is nothing more important than self growth and fulfilling your potential, and he is honored to help you achieve it.
In Taylor’s free time he enjoys living simply in his tiny home in Pittsboro with his cat, writing music, facilitating drum circles in the community, and camping out in nature.
A message from Taylor:
“Our natural state is one of bliss, joy, and abundance. We come into the world knowing and feeling this. However, due to difficult life experience(s), some of us derail from this state, forgetting this innate knowing, and begin to believe we are “not enough”, “unlovable”, or “unworthy.” These unhelpful and false core beliefs about ourselves influence our daily lives and dictate our reality causing pain and difficulty in areas such as relationships, careers, identity, and self-worth. As a music therapist, I uniquely combine music and counseling to help you identify, let go of, and replace your negative beliefs with your true and helpful beliefs, ushering in inner peace, happiness, and a return to your authentic self. I believe there is nothing in life more important than self-growth and am honored to be a part of your journey.”
