Emery Houldin (they/them), LCSWA
Outpatient Psychotherapist in South Durham
Welcome. My name is Emery, and I’m an Outpatient Psychotherapist at Three Oaks. I work with adolescents and adults navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, identity, relationships, and neurodivergence. I particularly enjoy working with queer and trans clients, as well as people who have had a lot of different explanations for what they’re experiencing but still feel like something is missing.
My work is psychodynamic and trauma-focused, and I integrate somatic, mindfulness, relational, and parts-based approaches. Depending on what you need and want, our work might involve deepening insight and understanding, paying attention to what your body is telling you, or figuring out what you want and charting concrete steps to get there.
I’m direct yet gentle, transparent, and collaborative. If I see a connection, I’ll tell you. If I think something could help, I’ll say so. And if I know something is outside what I do well, I’ll be honest about that too and help you find what you need. I also regularly check in about how the work is going and invite feedback about what is and isn’t helpful. I don’t assume your trust; it’s something I work to earn.
I am a former public defender and organizer, and I bring a social justice and liberation psychology perspective to my work. I believe therapy is a place to question the harmful messages we absorb from a capitalist, white supremacist, ableist, cis-hetero-patriarchal culture. When left unexamined, we can mistake these messages for truths about who we are. I’m especially interested in supporting authentic self-expression and in understanding the ways individual healing and collective power are connected.
If you’re interested in working together, I encourage starting with a free consultation to make sure it feels like a good fit!
